Deforestation

As trees grow, they remove carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the wood and soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Trees provide many benefits to us, every day. They offer cooling shade, block cold winter winds, attract birds and wildlife, prevent soil erosion, clean our water, and add grace and beauty to our homes and communities.

Deforestation is definitely a critical issue that needs attention. As a business owner, there are practical steps you can take to make a difference.

Consider the paper and wood products you use. Are there more sustainable alternatives available? Choosing products certified by organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) can help ensure that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests.

Think about your supply chain too. If you work with suppliers who source wood or paper products, encourage them to adopt sustainable practices. Your influence can have a ripple effect.

Is it possible to reduce paper usage in the office. Go digital if you can, use double-sided printing, and recycle paper. It’s the small changes that can collectively make a big difference.

Raising awareness is key. Use your business as a platform to educate your employees and customers about deforestation and its consequences. You can create a little display or share info to spread the word.

There are many things you can do to contribute to the economic, environmental and social benefits provided by trees.

Your business could get involved in tree-planting initiatives in your community. The task of restoring vegetation is more complex than simply planting seeds wherever there is soil. Success depends on planting the right tree for the right purpose in the right place. Participating in tree-planting events or supporting reforestation organizations can make a real impact.

Ask your council what trees they plan to plant in your streets. Eucalyptus trees absorb a lot of carbon because they grow quickly and they keep this carbon locked in for 100’s of years before they die.

Maintaining the health of existing trees is also very important, so that carbon will not be released from the wood of dead trees, prematurely. Make sure to have mulch around any trees planted near your building.

Can you improve the source or lessen the amount of the paper/wood products you use in your business? Will you become involved in the regeneration and maintenance of the trees in our world?
